Treating Dental Gum Disease

Alternative Approaches to Treating Gum Disease

Don't wait to come into our office for treatment of gum infection. Surgery may be the only option once the disease has reached a severe stage. In milder cases, nonsurgical means can be used to remedy the problem successfully. Most insurance coverage provides for either option. But the best treatment is prevention, so we encourage good daily dental care and regular hygiene visits to our office.

Dental Gum Disease

Gum Disease Can Present Serious Health Problems

Medical research has proven that gum disease affects more than your teeth. The bacteria in the gums eventually travels throughout the body and contributes to heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, as well as other concerns. What's worse, the American Dental Association has provided the statistic that potentially 80% of Americans have gum disease! That is a staggering percentage of the population with this affliction. If this were another disease, such as tuberculosis, it would be labeled a national epidemic! Dentists are now considering it to be just that, especially because with advanced periodontal disease, you can lose more than your teeth!

The American Academy of Periodontology reports, "studies found periodontal infection may contribute to the development of heart disease, increase the risk of premature, underweight births, and pose a serious threat to people whose health is already compromised due to diabetes and respiratory diseases."

Healthy gums could lead to a healthy heart

The association between gum diseases and heart disease is not a secret anymore. It has always raised a question in my mind if maintaining good oral health can help me achieve good overall health. Well, the answer is “yes.” Maintaining good oral health can save us from spending thousands of dollars on preventing heart diseases. We can say that proper brushing and flossing can help us maintain a healthy heart. According to the American Academy of Periodontolgy, people with gum diseases are twice as likely to develop coronary artery disease, one of the leading causes of heart attacks.

Atherosclerosis also known as “hardening of arterial wall” is one of the major etiological factors of heart disease. This occurs due to deposition of plaque (formed by accumulation of fat and other blood substances on the arterial wall). This can eventually clog the artery leading to complete blockage of coronary arteries precipitating into stroke.

Gum Disease & Tooth Loss

Gum Disease Treatment Naperville IL

The Most Common Reason for Missing Teeth

Many people believe tooth loss is mostly due to decay. But the main cause is periodontal (gum) disease. Often, the symptom of bleeding gums is present while brushing or flossing. But sometimes there are no signs of the condition until it is chronic and advanced. It is important to receive treatment in the early stages of the infection. But even if you've already been told you need gum surgery, it's possible that nonsurgical approaches will take care of the problem.
